Finke Gorge National Park

Finke Gorge National Park covers an area of 46,000 hectares of the vast Australian desert, in the midst of which the trees of Palm Valley sway like a green mirage. This oasis is a true natural wonder, brought to life by the oldest river on Earth - the Finke River. Its age is around 350 million years. It is not surprising that these places are sacred not only for the Aboriginal people but also for the first European settlers: the Finke River and Palm Valley are the only source of life for hundreds of kilometers around. The rarest species of palm trees grow here, including the Livistona palm, which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. You can stroll among the slender palms along the Arankaia Walk trail or embark on a longer journey along the Mpulungkinya Walk trail, and then make a 20-minute climb to Kalarranga mountain, which offers mesmerizing views of the mountain amphitheater. A two-hour excursion along the Mpaara Walk trail will introduce you to the myths and legends of the Aboriginal people of the Western Arrernte tribes.

Tours to Finke Gorge depart from Alice Springs. We recommend visiting the national park during the cooler months (from May to October) when daytime temperatures do not rise above +25 °C.
