Hobart is the capital city of the state of Tasmania. It was founded in 1804 at the mouth of the Derwent River, at the foot of Mount Wellington. Initially, it was just a tent city with a diverse population of military personnel, convicts, and free settlers. The settlement's fortunate location on the shores of one of the deepest harbors contributed to its successful development, and by 1842, Hobart had been declared a city.
Hobart is the smallest (with a population of 191,000) and southernmost "capital" of Australia. The city stretches along the coast and offers stunning views of the beach and mountains. Beautiful historic buildings from the previous century, a mild climate, and numerous parks make Hobart one of the most charming cities in Australia. It is sometimes called provincial, but this in no way diminishes its merits. Art and crafts thrive here. It is also home to the first legal casino in Australia.
When visiting Hobart, it is impossible to ignore the old port district of Battery Point, the Royal Botanical Gardens, Salamanca Place, and the Cascade Brewery – the oldest brewery in Australia, which still produces the best beer in the country.
