Jenolan Caves

Jenolan is a system of limestone caves located within the Blue Mountains National Park. The first European to discover the caves in 1838 was James McKeown. However, the local Aboriginal people had known about the caves for millennia and referred to them as "Binoomea," meaning "dark places."

The caves are formed from limestone, in which water has carved out a vast number of large and small passages. As a result, the interior of the caves resembles a giant block of Swiss cheese.

A trip to the Jenolan Caves is like a journey into a fairy tale: underground lakes and rivers, stalactites and stalagmites of astonishing shapes, and bizarre cave "sculptures" that fuel the imagination. The Jenolan Caves are still not fully explored. Most of this vast system is only accessible to cavers.
