Lake Taupo

Updated: Jun 13

Drained by the might Waikato River, Lake Taupo is NZ's largest lake, nestled in a caldera formed by a volcanic eruption several thousand years ago. Taupo is a great lake for water-skiing, sailing and kayaking. Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay on the lake are over 10 metres high and only accessible by boat or kayak. But Taupo is most famous for its fishing. There you can find the largest natural trout fishery in the world. Around the lake, you can hike in stunning landscapes, or bike along a range of custom-made mountain bike tracks in some of the country's most stunning native forest parks. Skydiving is a popular local sport & Taupo hosts an annual Iron Man event. Also, on the last Saturday each November, you can take part in the Lake Taupo Cycling Challenge, a tour around the lake that can take anywhere between four and ten hours.
