Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania. Located in the Tamar Valley, 64 km from Bass Strait and surrounded by mountains, Launceston has been nicknamed the "City of Gardens". It was founded in 1805 and was originally named Patersonia after its founder and first commandant, Colonel Paterson. The city center is surrounded by beautiful parks and lined with elegant colonial-style houses, many of which have been restored.
When visiting Launceston, you cannot miss the replica of a 19th-century Tasmanian village, Penny Royal World; the Waverley Woolen Mills, the oldest wool production facility in Australia, founded in 1874; the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.
