Melbourne

"The most liveable city on Earth" is the title bestowed on Melbourne, the capital of the state of Victoria, by the Washington-based Population Institute. Melbourne is distinguished by its exquisite lifestyle. It is a city of artists, intellectuals, and gourmands, as well as a magnet for big business. It's a city with unique architecture, where Victorian buildings blend harmoniously with modern skyscrapers.

Melbourne is located on the north-eastern bank of the Yarra River, near Port Phillip Bay. The city is considered one of Australia's major commercial and industrial centers. From 1901 to 1927 (before the founding of Canberra, Australia's current capital), Melbourne was the capital of the Australian Federation, and today it continues to be the country's sporting and cultural capital.

Dozens of arts, theater, and film festivals, as well as numerous sporting events, are held here. Among them are the famous Melbourne Cup horse race, featuring the world's best racehorses, and Formula 1 competitions. In 1956, Melbourne hosted the Summer Olympics, and in 2006, the Commonwealth Games. The city also hosted a meeting of Commonwealth Heads of Government in 1981 and the G20 summit in 2006. Melbourne's universities have gained worldwide recognition, and Prince Charles once attended Geelong Grammar School.
