The small town of Port Arthur, near Hobart, attracts tourists with its dark past. It was once the site of a penal colony, where convicts were sent from various parts of the British Empire. It was known as "hell on earth." Port Arthur was also home to the first juvenile correctional colony in the Empire. It was characterized by iron discipline and harsh punishments.
Today, old Port Arthur comprises around 30 buildings, some of which have been restored while others remain in ruins. By purchasing an entry ticket, you can spend two days exploring this historic site: take part in a guided walking tour, visit the museum and art gallery, embark on a cruise around the bay, and explore the port and docks.
