The town of Port Douglas, located 70 km north of Cairns, is renowned for two significant events. Firstly, in November 1996, it was chosen as the exclusive vacation spot for US President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary during their historic visit to Australia. Secondly, the world-famous Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, tragically lost his life on September 4, 2006, after being struck by a stingray in the local waters.
Additionally, Port Douglas is attracting global attention for an upcoming total solar eclipse. Scheduled for November 14, 2012, at 6:38 AM, the eclipse will be most visible in the Port Douglas area. This event is expected to draw thousands of tourists to the town. As soon as the first rays of the sun emerge from behind the moon, the town will host the 'Solar Eclipse Marathon,' featuring 2000 runners from around the world who will compete in a 42.195 km race.
