The Australia Zoo was founded in 1970 by Steve Irwin's parents, the renowned Crocodile Hunters, who was the creator of world-famous documentaries about the most dangerous wild animals and tragically died during a filming accident caused by a stingray.
From childhood, Irwin helped his parents care for crocodiles and other reptiles at the zoo, which was initially called the Beerwah Reptile Park (located in the Glass House Mountains region). Later, Steve and his wife Terri, his partner in dangerous filming, took over the management of the zoo. As a result, the zoo underwent significant transformations and in 2003-2004 received the Australian Tourism Awards in the category "Major Tourist Attraction of the Year."
Today, the zoo is home to 30 species of reptiles, 28 species of mammals, and 38 species of birds. Visitors to the zoo can watch the daily "Crocodile Feeding" show and personally feed Asian elephants.
