Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and the largest city in Australia, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It was here over 200 years ago that the history of European settlement of the Australian continent began. The city was founded on January 26, 1788, by the English Captain Arthur Phillip on the shores of Sydney Cove. Both the cove and the city were named after Lord Sydney, who was then the British Secretary of State for the Colonies.
Today, the most recognizable landmarks of Australia are reflected in the blue waters of Sydney Harbour: the white sails of the Sydney Opera House and the lacy spans of one of the largest steel arch bridges in the world, the Harbour Bridge. In 1957, local authorities passed a law limiting building height to 46 meters for the next 45 years. This law gave rise to an architecture that blends history and modernity.
When visiting Sydney, one cannot miss the television tower (AMP Tower Centerpoint), which offers a magnificent panorama from the Pacific Ocean to the Blue Mountains at a height of 305 meters; the oldest district of the city, The Rocks, with its many historic buildings, museums, restaurants, and shops; one of the oldest museums in Australia, the Australian Museum; the Sydney Aquarium; the Royal Botanic Gardens; and Taronga Zoo, where animals have been kept in open enclosures since 1916.
