Uluru Monolith / Ayers Rock

You may have heard of the red monolith Uluru (also known in English as Ayers Rock), which is the pride of Australia's Red Centre. This rock formation, estimated to be around 680 million years old and reaching a height of 348 meters at its peak, is sacred to the Indigenous people. It changes color throughout the day depending on the lighting.

At dawn, the black silhouette of the mountain lightens, taking on a dark purple hue. As the sun rises higher, Uluru blazes with a crimson red, then glows pink, and by midday, it turns golden. This fantastic play of color continues throughout the day, and by evening, the chameleon-like mountain transforms into a dark silhouette against the desert backdrop.

Numerous legends tell of the creation of this magical mountain. According to one of them, it was created by ancient giants. In shape, Uluru resembles a giant smooth-skinned elephant lying on its side, which, upon closer inspection, turns into a cracked monolith of red sandstone. The caves of Uluru are adorned with rock carvings and ancient petroglyphs, including images of the most revered deities of the Aboriginal people: Mala ("Hare Wallaby"), Kunia ("Python Woman"), and Liru ("Brown Snake").
