The Treaty of Waitangi (maori: Te Tiriti o Waitangi) is NZ's founding document and is an agreement that was made between the British Crown and 540 Maori rangatira (chiefs). It was signed here, at the Treaty Ground, an expansive & beautiful historic site overlooking the Bay of Islands. As well as spectacular views, you can enjoy the historic grounds, the museum, fascinating cultural performances and a traditional Maori feast. Every February 6, the grounds host the Waitangi festival with the most senior Maori representatives and NZ Government officials attending to commemorate the Treaty signing.
