Guided Tour, Cultural Show & Hangi Meal at Whakarewarewa Maori Village, Rotorua
The only living geothermal Maori village, Whakarewarewa is gifted with geothermal vents that provide life-giving and sustaining energy resources. You will experience an authentic living Maori village where people use natural geothermal resources to cook, bathe and heat their homes. You will learn about the vibrant Maori culture and the traditions of your hosts, the Tuhourangi/Ngati Wahiao tribe. At a Maori cultural performance by one of the leading Kara Hake Groups you’ll hear traditional song and dance & witness the fearsome Hake. From the communal outdoor living area (Rahui) & the Wahiaoour ancestral meeting place, to the pre-school (Kohanga Reo) which played its part in revitalising the Maori language, and the village cemetery of both Catholic and Anglican churches (the missionary influence), your Maori experience will be almost complete. The final element will be the Hangi meal, with foods traditionally cooked in the natural steam vents and hot pools. Yumm!
