Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, Rotorua
Wai-O-Tapu is a spectacular showcase of New Zealand’s most colourful and unique geothermal elements sculpted & formed by thousands of years of volcanic activity. Technically, it’s part of an 18sq Km active geothermal park at the northern end of the Reporoa Caldera (a collapsed volcanic crater) that formed 230,000 years ago. Completely unique and totally surreal, Wai-O-Tapu is Maori for ‘Sacred Waters’, named in recognition of the mana (spiritual power) embodied in it, but we just know it as a thermal wonderland. Well defined tracks take you around the volcanic features, the mud pools and to the Lady Knox Geyser which erupts at 10:15am every day. JustGoThere!
